Don Bolduc, the Republican candidate for New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate, was said to have avoided an attacker’s punch before taking to the stage for Wednesday’s debate alongside Democratic incumbent Sen. Maggie Hassan.
Bolduc, 60 years old, is a retired Army brigadier-general. He was not injured in the attack. The assailant was identified as Joseph Hart (37), Greenville, R.I.
Local police released a statement saying that “prior to that debate, there were dozens of supporters for both candidates.” “During that time St. Anselm College instructed one male party that they were not welcome on their property.”
“Another disturbance took place when Mr. Hart approached Mr. Bolduc, who was greeting his supporters,” continued the statement. “Officers arrived in the area and separated all parties,” the statement continued. The Goffstown Police Department took Mr. Hart into custody and charged him with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.
Bolduc Campaign stated in a statement that the incident was evidence it was time to lower the political discourse in the country and expressed gratitude for the prompt response of local law enforcement.
Maggie Hassan, the incumbent Democrat, has been leading in polls throughout the campaign. However, two recent polls show Bolduc ahead. RealClearPolitics projects Bolduc to win the race.
