On Friday, a fire ravaged a Texas church and destroyed nearly everything inside, except for a cross that remained standing.

The fire broke out at the Balsora Baptist Church in Bridgeport and quickly consumed the structure, according to Wise County Emergency Services Department No. 2.

After the smoke cleared away, firefighters saw the sign of hope that was still standing as the flames were extinguished.

The department stated that the fire was a devastating loss for our community but it was a beautiful sight. The fire destroyed the structure but not the cross. A symbol that the building was just that, a building. The Church is the congregation, and where 2 or more gather, there He shall be also.”

The extreme temperatures presented a challenge for the fire crew’s resources, prompting officials, to ask for assistance from at least 11 other state and local agencies, according to the department.

According to fire officials, as firefighters battled the flames, the church roof collapsed with crews still inside. Wise County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) treated several firefighters on the spot.

Investigators are still investigating the cause of the fire.

KSAT-TV reported that the church held a Sunday prayer meeting despite the terrible loss.
