Authorities said that a Texas man wounded two deputies in a traffic stop before the officers returned fire to kill him.

In a press release, the sheriff’s department of Callaway County said that a deputy from the county initiated a traffic check around 3:35 am on Monday morning. A second deputy arrived shortly after.

Deputies discovered that the 37-year-old driver from Texas had multiple felony warrants relating to drug trafficking, assaulting law officers, and alleged assaulting of a police officer. Shortly after, the deputies informed dispatchers that he was resisting arrest and then reported shots fired.

Chief Deputy Curtis Hall said that the driver fired at the deputies who then returned fire, killing him.

The driver was declared dead on the spot. Hall reported that both deputies were in stable condition. The names of those involved have not been released by the authorities.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of drug and Criminal Control will investigate this shooting.
