Oh, that was ugly. Do you dare to say that it’s already over?

JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, appeared this Sunday on “Meet the Press,” to make Kristen Welker look foolish. Let me rephrase: to make Welker look foolish.

In the segment, Trump promised blanket tariffs. I will write an article about why this is a bad idea. (Hint – exporters do not pay tariffs as Trump claims, importers do.)

Welker asked Vance, “How do I respond to the charge that Trump tariffs will hurt middle-class families?”

JD was more than willing to answer.

You should take a step back, Kristen. There was this whole thing Kamala did at the convention, where she made all these claims about what will happen. But there wasn’t enough reflection on what had already happened. Donald Trump is already president. He used tariffs to bring manufacturing back to our nation, and I think he will do it again. He did this while maintaining extremely low prices.

If you look back at the Trump administration, 12,000 factories were built. Inflation never went above 2 percent in his whole presidency… but was usually around 1 percent. When Kamala Harris states, “If we do what Trump did, it will be worse than last time,” she is referring to the Trump presidency. This doesn’t make sense to me.

That was simple.

Facts and statistics are what holy water and crucifixes are to vampires.

Vance believes the election in 2024 will be ‘free and fair’

Vance also told Welker that he believes the elections will be “free” and “fair.”

Welker: Let’s move on to something Donald Trump said again in North Carolina on Friday night.

Below is a video of Trump’s Friday night performance.

We are not concerned with getting out the vote. Our main concern is to ensure that they do not cheat. We have all the votes that you need. You can see…

I am not going to argue with Donald but getting people to vote is always the most important thing, especially if you think the other side will cheat. It is logical to assume that the more votes one gets, the harder it will be for the opposition to cheat.

Welker asked, “Why does Donald Trump cast doubt on the elections before they’ve even taken place?”

Vance’s opinion was his own, no matter what argument you accept. Vance began by saying:

He’s saying that we want to pursue public policies within the Republican Party to make it easier to cast legal ballots and to count them while making it harder to count illegally cast votes.

We can argue about the number of these cases — a few hundred or a few thousand, perhaps more — but in just the last week… in Arizona and in Pennsylvania two major court victories made our voting process more effective and secure. Donald Trump may be talking about this.

Sometimes we have to go through the courts, other times, better policies at state and national levels, to ensure that every ballot is counted legally.

Welker responded: “Well, (Trump’s remarks) are very different from your message which…was “We must work as hard as we can to convince Americans to vote us …”

“Are you in the same boat as Donald Trump?” Welker added: “Once again, it seems that he is casting doubt on the election results before they’ve even been held.”

Vance responded by laughing, and then he laughed.

We’re definitely on the same page. We speak all the time. I’m sure if you asked him, “Mr. President, do you think that your campaign should persuade as many voters as possible?” he would say yes. This is not incompatible with the idea that we should pursue a series of approaches to ensure that only legal ballots are counted and that illegal ballots aren’t counted.

Welker went to the hoops one more time. Do you believe that the election in 2024 will be fair and free?

Vance replied:

I do, Kristen. I believe it will be fair and free, and we are going to do all we can to ensure that this happens. We’re going to pursue every avenue possible to ensure that legal votes are counted. I am very happy with where we are. I believe we will win this race and we are going to win a good election.

In my opinion, Vance did a great job of navigating between two sets of different beliefs.

What do you say?
