North Carolina Community College Lifts Lockdown After Police Chase Felon With Body Armor Near Campus

The Sylva Community College, North Carolina’s Southwest, was placed into “immediate lockdown” Tuesday morning by police in pursuit of a felon close to the Jackson campus.

Initial alerts by the college to students about an “active shooter situation” near campus were made. However, later information was provided that stated, “Our current info is that there is no active shooter situation at the moment.”

At noon, the lockdown was lifted. Southwestern stated that the lockdown was lifted at noon.

Southwestern stated that the subject fled initially to a wooded area just behind Lowe’s at 11:05 a.m. Update.

In an alert sent to faculty just before 10:30 AM, the school advised them to secure students and secure work areas and to lock all doors in classrooms, offices, and suites.

According to the school, doors were not allowed to be opened or locked until law enforcement or administration cleared the situation.

The Jackson campus of Southwestern Community College is located in Sylva in western North Carolina, in Jackson County.
