According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are at least 3,085 locally acquired viruses in the United States this year.

According to the CDC, the number of locally acquired cases of dengue has doubled this year compared to last. Puerto Rico is currently the largest source of these cases, with more than 2,960 cases reported. In March, the U.S. Territory declared a health emergency.

The City of Baldwin Park has been made aware of recent local dengue cases in our community. “While the risk of dengue transmission is low, we need to take this seriously and act proactively,” stated Mayor Emmanuel J. Estrada.

Dengue viruses are spread by mosquito bites. The most common symptoms include fever, aches, pains, nausea and vomiting, and rash. The symptoms usually start within two weeks of being bitten by a mosquito infected and last between 2 to 7 days. The majority of people can recover within a week.

Locally acquired dengue cases are those infected who have not traveled to a place where dengue is normally prevalent. Local dengue transmission occurs in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including Florida and U.S. territory in the Caribbean.

According to CDC statistics, only two local cases were reported last year in California. This was the first time in more than a decade that the state had reported any local cases.

In June, the CDC sent out a health warning to healthcare providers about an increased risk this year of infection with the dengue virus. According to the CDC, global dengue cases are at their highest level ever. The CDC also stated that dengue cases will likely increase as temperatures rise globally.

According to the CDC, the best way to prevent dengue virus is to avoid mosquito bites.
