Senator Rand Paul, R-KY, is known for wearing many hats. He is not only a bulldog who will question evasive witnesses such as, Dr. Anthony Fauci. He’s also a master of filibustering and has survived the congressional baseball shooting as well as an attack from a neighbor which left him seriously injured. He also has a great sense of humor.

He is also a doctor, which was a skill that proved to be very useful Thursday at a Senate Lunch. Joni Ernst, a fellow senator (R-IA), choked on food. Paul performed the Heimlich maneuver to free Ernst from the food.

Burgess Everett, the POLITICO congressional Bureau chief, commented on the incident via X/Twitter after the scare.

Attendees reported that Rand Paul performed the Heimlich on Joni Ernst during today’s Senate lunch. She was choking on some food. Senators confirm that she is fine.

It sounds like Ernst will be fine. She also made a joke.

Ernst quipped: “Can’t stop but choke on the woke Dems policies that are forcing down our throats. Thanks, Dr. @RandPaul!”

What you need to know about the luncheon

Ernst hosted Thursday’s luncheon. It is usually provided by a fellow member and often features the delicacies of their home state. Chuck Grassley, her fellow Iowa Senator (R), posted about the meal a few days before. The Hawkeye State was the star of the meal.

The Washington Post reported that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who has often fought with Paul on foreign policy matters over the years, said, “God Bless Rand Paul.”

“I never imagined I would say that,” he said.

Good save, Dr. Paul.
