Did you catch that? Mayor Adams presumes illegal aliens have good swimming skills, possibly because they swam to come here. Isn’t this, well, racism? Why didn’t Adams say their clothing might be more moist due to the Rio Grande crossing?
The New York Post has a few things to say about the whole thing.
Hizzoner dropped the comment after being asked during a City Hall briefing about lifeguard staffing at the city’s beaches and pools, which have increasingly had issues recently, ahead of Memorial Day.
Adams went off on a tangent and said that Gotham’s lifeguard shortages would be easily fixed if work visas for migrant workers were expedited to fill those jobs that needed to be filled immediately.
The mayor asked: “How can we have so many people in our country and city who are great swimmers, and yet we are short of lifeguards? And the only thing that stands between us and them is that we will not allow them to train to be a lifeguard?”
It’s not logical.
At least he got the last sentence right. He said nothing about it that made sense. It’s worse than that. It’s stupid in a racist sense, but also in that it is absurd to trust people who entered the United States illegally to save people from drowning.
It is baffling that this man was elected by (presumably) the taxpaying citizens of New York to run the city, yet he seems so clueless. This statement is impossible to defend. He may be able to fill other cities’ employment shortages by bringing in other illegal immigrants. You can, for example:
They are “good with explosives” and could be bomb disposal specialists.
Because they are “good with oral hygiene,” immigrants from the United Kingdom may be hired as dentists.
They are “so familiar” with alcohol that they could work at the city’s licensing office.
The Japanese could work as animal control workers because they are “good at dealing with city-destroying creatures.”
What will be the end of it all?
When you switch from de Blasio, to this guy you are jumping from one pan to another. Mayor Adams gives Joe Biden a good run for his money regarding cluelessness. He could find an illegal immigrant who’s good at being the mayor of a large city. This shouldn’t be difficult. New Yorkers already set the bar pretty low.
