Dallas Police Department said it was “hurting” after one of their officers was killed, and two others were injured, by a man who died later in a shootout following a police chase.
Investigators report that the incident started around 10 pm on Thursday when Dallas Police responded for an officer in distress at the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. They found the officer in a squad car that was “marked” with an “Exchange of gunfire between a suspect and two other officers”.
Dallas Police said that the suspect fled the scene at high speed. Officers pursued him until they reached Lewisville, in the 1000 Block of Stemmons Freeway. Dallas Police said that the preliminary investigation revealed the suspect had a gun when he got out of his vehicle. He was shot and died on the spot.
Dallas Police spokesperson Kristin Lowerman stated at an early Friday morning press conference that “our department hurts” and that “we have injured officers in the hospital, and we lost one our own.”
She said: “We ask for your thoughts and prayers tonight and today morning, not just for those in the hospital, but also for our fallen soldiers, their families, their loved ones and us as a police department.”
The suspect’s motive and the names of the involved parties have not been revealed.
Dallas Police says one of the officers injured is in critical condition while the other is stable.
This morning, Police Chief Eddie Garcia said on X that he had “no words.”
The department announced on Friday that all flags will be lowered to half-staff at city facilities.
KDFW reported that dozens of police officers waited outside the Methodist Dallas Medical Center where the officer was taken to be treated.
The station reports that the officer was later taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, in a procession that began around 4 am.
