Officials said that an off-duty Atlanta Police Department officer was killed early Friday morning by a neighbor after he allegedly broke into a home near St. Andrews Golf Club, Douglas County, Georgia.
Aubree Horton was the officer who had served with the Atlanta Police Department from 2015, and most recently in the Fugitive Unit.
Horton also received the Investigator of the Year award at the end of last month.
The department released a statement saying that it was working closely with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in order to find out more information about the incident.
Surveillance footage showed that Horton was either experiencing a mental health episode or under the influence of drugs.
“When he gained entrance, the homeowner produced a firearm in self-defense and shot the individual,” Capt. Jon Mauney of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office told reporters.
The station reported that Horton only lived a few streets away from the home he was accused of breaking into.
The neighbors were shocked.
“It’s right here in your neighborhood and a golfing community and a place where you really think this would never happen,” one neighbor stated.
Horton’s motive for breaking into the house is still unknown to investigators.
